An ode to sushi

Anyone who knows me personally will be completely aware of the fact that I am an absolute die hard sushi addict. From the first time I came to “know” sushi it was truly love at first bite.

Apart from the fact that sushi tastes like little fairies dancing on your taste buds – it also has several health benefits. How’s that for a win-win situation?

And so, I present to you 8 mind-blowing health benefits of these tiny parcels of joy:

1)  Sushi, as a whole, is low in calories.

2) Oily fish is high in omega-3 fatty acids, which can be effective in preventing heart disease, strokes and arthritis.

3) Rice is a great source of carbohydrates and protein.

4) The vinegar which is used to make the rice has anti-bacterial properties. It also aids in digestion and lowering the risk of high blood pressure.

5) Ginger is a natural antiseptic. This pickled root boosts the immune system and helps fight off colds and flu.

6) Soybeans (used to make soy sauce) are high in protein, magnesium, potassium and iron. Soy products contain phytoestrogens, which have been successfully used to treat problems linked with menopause.

7) Nori (made from seaweed) is highly nutritious.  It contains protein, minerals–especially iodine–and is rich in vitamins A, B1, B2, B6, niacin and C. Nori helps prevent cholesterol deposits from building up in the blood vessels.

8) Wasabi is rich in Vitamin C. It stimulates the production of saliva and in turn aids digestion.

I don’t know about you but I’m considering exchanging my daily multivitamins for a daily dose of sushi! I completely understand if you are not a fan. We are all entitled to a list of foods that we just can’t stand (and I respect that). If you haven’t tried sushi though – maybe it’s time?
